Branden Jacobs-Jenkins’ Boldly irreverent retelling of Boucicault's Melodrama. The play handles stereotypes, and goes into their brutal origins. The historical elements are played fast and loose, but the period costume pieces are meant really feel old, as if they are taken from a rotten attic. It takes a fresh look at something purposefully forgotten.
